In Messina there are three D.O.C. wines.

Malvasia delle Lipari, Faro, and Mamertino

In recent years, the quality of wine production in this area has greatly improved, now competing with major labels on the market. I invite you to taste the wines of Messina and visit the region—you’re going to love it.

Malvasia

Malvasia is the best-known wine from Messina, even to those who aren’t wine enthusiasts. It belongs to the family of aromatic wines due to its intense fragrance. It’s a sweet dessert wine but is also used in cooking, particularly with meats. Most of the production comes from the island of Salina, in the Aeolian archipelago.

Faro

Then there’s Faro, a ruby-red wine made from grapes like Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Nocera, and Nero d’Avola. The most significant production comes from the hills of Messina near the village of Faro.

Mamertino

Lastly, we have Mamertino, a wine with a long history—Julius Caesar and Pliny the Elder both mentioned it. This wine is also ruby red and is made with at least 30% Nocera, Nero d’Avola, and Calabrese grapes. It’s produced along the coastal strip between Messina and Milazzo, as well as in the Ionian belt near Messina.
